Born in 1939, David studied Zoology with Applied Zoology at the University College of North Wales and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 1970. Previously employed by the Nature Conservancy in Wareham; The Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control in Europe and South America; the University of Bristol; Long Ashton Horticultural Research Station, and on the academic staff of the University of West Indies; he returned to England in 1978 and joined the academic staff of Exeter University.
David has undertaken scientific research in ecological entomology, in particular neotropical leaf-cutting ants, as well as tropical tarantula spiders. He is the author and co-author of many research papers and has served as an advisor in the making of wildlife films with the BBC Natural History Unit, Oxford Scientific Films, as well as other independent film companies.
He feels that with his experience in conservation, higher education and neotropical rainforest ecology he can make a useful contribution towards furthering the objectives of the Trust and Zoo. Since his retirement he has been able to devote more time to the Trust and took over as Chairman in 2000.
