Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust

Hugh Whitley

Appointed 1979

Born in 1936, Hugh was educated at Canford School and The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester where he received a National Diploma in Agriculture. Although recently retired from farming, he is a Teignbridge District Councillor and has held office for the last 18 years.

Hugh Whitley is the only active Trustee who knew our founder, Herbert Whitley. He recalls visiting him on Sundays, along with his parents, just after the second world war. By nature rather reclusive, Uncle Herbert would on many occasions be hard to find, often preferring his own company to that of his visitors, and would hide away in his lofts until they had left!

Herbert Whitley bequeathed the Zoo and land at Slapton to Philip Michelmore and appointed him as sole Trustee to establish a charitable scientific and educational Trust. Philip Michelmore became Managing Trustee with Hugh Whitley’s father, William Wallace Whitley and George Blackwood Reade being appointed as additional Trustees.

In order to perpetuate the Whitley name, Hugh Whitley was invited to join the Board of Trustees in 1979 after his father’s retirement at the age of 65.
