Born in 1929 the son of North-Country and Devon parents, Michael has been interested in natural history – freshwater life, flowers, birds and insects – longer than he can remember. He studied botany, zoology and chemistry for his degree at Cambridge, then did research on rock-roses (Helianthemum) and worked for two years with the Nature Conservancy in North Wales before joining the University of Exeter where he taught botany and ecology for many years.

Now retired, he is still active in research, and is an Honorary University Fellow in the School of Biosciences. He was co-author with Peter Yeo of “The Pollination of Flowers” (1973) and with Peter Yeo and Andrew Lack of “The Natural History of Pollination”, and author of many scientific papers. He is a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and was also one of the team responsible for the National Vegetation Classification. He is a keen nature photographer, a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a founder member of the Devon Wildlife Trust. He has a long standing interest in nature conservation. Michael’s association with the Zoo, primarily as a botanist, dates from the 1960s.
