Sylvia is the Principal of Abbey School in Torquay.. Having actively taught in classrooms for over thirty years, been a secondary school governor for sixteen and an inspector of schools for six, Sylvia, who is an advocate of Life Long Learning, hopes that her expertise and experience in schools will support one of the major tenets of the work of the Trust, that of promoting education. Away from her roles in education Sylvia is an executive of a local trader’s association and also chairman of one and company secretary of a second property development company, both operating in the South West.
Sylvia’s early childhood was spent in Ethiopia and Egypt; she has clear memories of swimming with dolphins and seahorses, and also recollects watching the desert bloom after scarce falls of rain. Later, at school in northern Germany, she experienced botany and sea life at lower temperatures. Compulsory weekend walks in the winter months round the frozen dykes and bleak coastal sand dunes of Wilhelmshaven included watching North Sea ice-floes and breaking the ice to release trapped sea birds.
