Library

The Trust's library, which is housed at Paignton Zoo, comprises Herbert Whitley's private collection, which includes books, journals, publicity and press cuttings dating from 1908.

Subsequent purchases and donations mean that the WWCT library now consists of over 6,000 books including some old and unusual volumes. The library specialises in biological and botanical subjects including natural history, biogeography, animal behaviour, conservation, ecology, and habitat management. There are also large sections of literature on animal welfare, husbandry and veterinary care.

The library also holds animal studbooks, copies of research dissertations, current journals, conference proceedings, and has a wealth of information relating to the WWCT and Paignton Zoo. The library is used by zoo staff, research students carrying out projects at the Zoo, students from Bridgwater College and Plymouth and Exeter Universities and it is also available to annual members of the three zoos to use. The library is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. until 4.30 p.m.

The library is managed by the Trust secretary and volunteers. The Trust tries to keep the library as up-to-date and comprehensive as possible so donations of relevant materials are always welcome.
